DURHAM, N.C. – Staying connected with our alumnae, Duke field hockey is beginning an "Alumna Spotlight" and the first week features
Brenna Rescigno.
Rescigno, a 2014 graduate, spent four seasons with the Blue Devils in which she played 75 games on the back line. During her senior year, she helped guide Duke to the NCAA Championship match for the program's first appearance since 2005.
Earning a bachelor's degree in sociology with a markets and management certificate, Rescigno attended the Fuqua School of Business where she graduated in 2015 with a master's in management studies. Rescigno is currently a Senior Account Executive at Gartner in Dallas, Texas.
If you could go back to the beginning of your freshman year at Duke, what is one piece of advice you would tell yourself?
Brenna: Properly condition to be fully prepared for preseason fitness testing in the North Carolina heat and make it a priority to incorporate "mental preparation" into your game.
What is your favorite memory from being on the field hockey team at Duke?
Brenna: Senior Year was the most memorable time during my Duke Field Hockey career – I had the best coaching, best teammates and best moments in 2013. Two distinct memories stick out to me from that amazing year: 1) Beating UNC in 3OT under the lights in Chapel Hill! 2) Taking down #1 Maryland in the Final Four to make it to the National Championship.
Is there a phrase/advice that you've carried with you from Coach Bustin?
Brenna: "Duke True." Pam created the "Duke True" culture when she became our head coach in the spring of 2011. These two powerful words truly sum up what DUFH stands for and expects from the young women who join the program. We hold ourselves accountable and to the highest standard in the way we train, the way we communicate and the way we perform on and off the field. This "Duke True" culture is so special, and I've carried it with me into my professional sales career as well as my retired days of running marathons!
How did you benefit the most being a student-athlete at Duke?
Brenna: The biggest benefit from being a Duke student-athlete was having the unique opportunity to receive an unbelievable education and compete at the highest level of collegiate athletics in the ACC. And the endless supply of Duke Nike gear was great, too!
What does it mean to you to be an alumna of DUFH?
Brenna: Technically, I may be a DUFH alumna, but I still feel as if I'm a member of the team. No matter how many years have gone by, I continue to cheer for the team, support them and hope they bring DUFH's first ever National Championship title back to Durham. I'm proud to have not only been a member of this program, but even more proud to be a part of the DUFH family. Always and Forever Duke True.
How do you stay connected with field hockey and/or the program?
Brenna: I've been very fortunate to stay involved with the DUFH program since I graduated and hung up the jersey. Over the years, I've had the privilege to cover five different DUFH teams and been able broadcast some unforgettable ACC & NCAA matchups on ACC Network and ESPN. I absolutely love broadcasting alongside my fellow co-anchor,
Ryan Craig, and being able to stay connected with the DUFH program.
Rescigno will be taking over the Duke field hockey Instagram tomorrow, April 3 – you can follow along
here. You can also stay connected with the Blue Devils on
