DURHAM, N.C. – Duke field hockey is excited to announce its final incoming freshman in the 2020 recruiting class as Barb Civitella is set to join the Blue Devils for the 2020-2021 school year.
Civitella, a midfielder from Wayne, Penn., attends Radnor High School. She was a four-year letterwinner under head coach Katie Maguire. Throughout her four years, she earned numerous honors including: All-Region, All-Main Line, All-Delco, All-Central League and Pennsylvania School Hall of Fame Scholar Athlete. As a senior, Civitella tallied 10 goals.
On the club scene, Civitella has played for the Main Line Mayhem Field Hockey Club the last six years, playing both forward and midfield. With her club team, they were named Festival Champions and NIT Champions. Civitella has also been selected for the USA RISE National Team.
Off the field, she is President of Best Buddies, an AP Scholar with Honors, STEM Scholar, member of National Honor Society, Model Congress, RadTV and was the lead in the spring musical. Aside from field hockey, Civitella lettered two years in track and field where she was the Central League 3200 Invidiual Girls Champion in 2017.
Born Barbara Noonan Civitella on July 23, 2002, she is the daughter of Peter and Melisa Civitella and has three older siblings: Eva (23), Peter (22) and Patrick (19).

What is your favorite field hockey memory?
"Playing in my club coach's basement turf. It was so amazing to me that she had her own "field" in her house. Whether we were doing random workout videos or the most basic skills, I always had a blast down there. It's so special because that's where it all began!"
How did you start playing field hockey?
"I started playing in a CYO league in fifth grade, but I didn't start club until seventh and that's when I really fell in love with it!"
Best advice you've ever been given?
"KISS – Keep It Simple Stupid. I often find myself overthinking things or thinking of a million solutions to a problem, but to keep me focused, my coach told me to keep it simple and remember it by the acronym, KISS."
Why did you choose Duke?
"The outstanding reputation of the field hockey team along with the incredible academic reputation of Duke seemed like the perfect fit for me. I love competing and I hoped to compete at the highest level, so Duke is the best place for that!"
If you could go back in time and give your freshman self some advice, what would it be?
"Everything happens for a reason so take advantage of every opportunity to grow and never give up."
