BALTIMORE, Md. – Duke goaltender
Turner Uppgren made a season-high 15 saves and
Dyson Williams added four goals and an assist to lead No. 12 Duke past No. 11 Loyola, 13-10, in men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Ridley Athletic Complex. The win is the fourth straight for the Blue Devils over the Greyhounds.
Duke (5-2) got goals from six different players, including a hat trick from
Nakeie Montgomery, to continue its balanced scoring on the year.
Garrett Leadmon contributed two in his first return to his home state and senior Joey
Manown notched a pair.
Defensively, Duke held Loyola (4-2) to .222 shooting for the afternoon and forced 13 turnovers. Both
Kenny Brower and
Walker Scaglione had two caused turnovers apiece as the defense held Loyola leading scorers Kevin Lindley (two goals) and Aidan Olmstead (one goal) to only three goals, two shy of their five-plus goal per game average.
Thanks to six saves from Uppgren and Duke's balanced offense, the Blue Devils grabbed a 3-0 lead after the opening 15 minutes. Three different players scored as Leadmon started the scoring and Montgomery and Manown added tallies.
Loyola took 10 shots in the first period, but Uppgren was seeing everything the Greyhounds threw his way. The second quarter was all Blue Devils as well, as they tacked on five more goals and held Loyola to just one man-up goal for an 8-1 lead heading into the locker room. The Greyhounds had just six shots in the second quarter.
Junior
JP Basile started the 5-0 second-quarter run minutes into the frame and then Williams and Montgomery both scored twice to stretch Duke's lead to 8-0. Meanwhile, on the other end of the field, Uppgren continued to impress in making three more saves to bring his first-half total to nine, which were more than he had in four of his five outings this season.
Duke, getting goals from Williams and a faceoff tally from
Jordan Ginder, pulled ahead 10-3 and seemed to be cruising midway through the third period, but momentum shifted in Loyola's favor with the Greyhounds scoring four of the period's final five goals to make it 10-6. Two of the quarter's four tallies came up on man-up opportunities for Loyola.
After forcing Loyola into a shot clock violation to start the quarter, Manown rolled on his man and dove for his second of the day to end Duke's scoring drought at 11:56 and give the Blue Devils the four-goal lead. Just 43 seconds later,
Kevin Quigley dodged down the right alley and found Williams in front of the cage for his fourth and final afternoon to extend the lead back to six and put the victory on ice.
The Greyhounds tacked on three more goals, two from man-up, in the final 4:34. Loyola went 5-of-7 on extra man for the day.
Duke took just 35 shots, scoring 13 goals and putting 22 of them on target, while Loyola had 45. Ginder was solid at the X, winning 11-of-27 faceoffs against Bailey Savio who came in winning 70 percent of his draws. Ginder also had five ground balls and a goal. Sam Shafer and Colton Teitelbaum shared time for Loyola, combining for nine stops.
The Blue Devils return home for a Tuesday night match against Jacksonville. Faceoff is set for 6 p.m., on ESPNU.
