DURHAM, N.C.—Duke junior attackman
JP Basile scored three goals and handed out five assists to lead the eighth-ranked Blue Devils to an 18-8 victory against Jacksonville in midweek men's lacrosse action. The win is the fourth straight for Duke with one more game remaining before ACC play opens.
Basile, coming in off the bench midway through the Richmond game, has been exceptional for the Duke (6-2) attack. The native of Garden City, N.Y., has 19 points in the past four games from five goals and 14 assists. His 14 assists are nearly twice as many as the next closest Blue Devil.
"[JP's] got terrific skills and he's been waiting his turn," said head coach
John Danowski. "So given the opportunity he has certainly made the most of it."
Garrett Leadmon added a career-high matching four goals as 11 different Blue Devils scored.
CJ Carpenter came off the bench to score twice and
Nakeie Montgomery added two. Defensively, Duke held Jacksonville (3-3) to only 29 shots and forced 14 turnovers.
The Blue Devils got off to a slow start, struggling with 10 turnovers in the first half. Duke senior
Joey Manown scored 2:15 into the game, but Jacksonville's Jeremy Winston and Jacob Greiner responded with a pair for the 2-1 lead midway through the period. Winston posted two goals and three assists, while Greiner had three goals.
Duke rookie
Connor Drake tied the game nine seconds before the break to jumpstart a 5-1 run and send the Blue Devils into halftime up 6-3.
Sophomore
Jordan Ginder won 9-of-10 faceoffs in the first half to keep the ball in Duke's possession, while the defense didn't allow the Dolphins to capitalize on the turnovers in holding it to only 11 shots. Senior
Terry Lindsay finished the night with two caused turnovers, three ground balls and a goal, while
JT Giles-Harris had two ground balls and two forced turnovers.
"I think in the first half, defensively we were very consistent from the first whistle to the halftime break," Danowski said. "
Jordan Ginder did a great job facing off, but we had real trouble passing and catching. We just didn't give ourselves any opportunities to make plays."
Duke hit the reset button at halftime and cruised in the second half, scoring 12 goals en route to the 10-goal win. Leadmon scored 1:32 into the quarter and Duke never looked back in gradually extending its lead.
After Jacksonville scored twice to make it 11-7, the Blue Devils scored seven straight, including four from four different players in a span of 1:57.
Senior
Turner Uppgren was solid again in goal, making 10 saves in 51 minute in net. He has 25 saves in the previous two games. Ginder finished the night 19-of-25 from the X and picked up 10 ground balls. Hunter Sells made four saves in his 51 minutes of play for Jacksonville.
Duke hits the road back to Baltimore, Md., Saturday for a matchup at Towson. Faceoff is 3 p.m., on LSN.
