DURHAM, N.C. – Led by a career-high performance from junior pitcher
Brianna Butler, Duke softball opened its 2020 Duke Invitational with a 5-1 victory over Fordham on Friday night.
The Blue Devils upped their season record to 18-4 overall while the Rams went 0-2 on the day, falling to 4-13. Butler notched her sixth win in the circle, dealing seven complete innings while racking up a career-high 10 strikeouts.
Fordham plated the first run of the contest with an RBI double to right field, taking a 1-0 advantage in the second frame. Duke gained the lead in the bottom half as junior
Jameson Kavel launched a two-run homer to center – her first home run of the season (2-1).
Sophomore
Deja Davis used her speed to round the bases in the third to record her fourth triple of the year before she was brought home on senior
Raine Wilson's third long ball of the season (4-1).
Garnering her second hit of the game, Kavel singled up the middle in the fourth and scored on another shot through the middle from junior
Rachel Crabtree.
Butler struck out two batters swinging in the final frame to break her single-game punchout record while improving to 37 in her junior campaign.
The Blue Devils return for two games tomorrow, beginning with Kent State at 2:30 p.m. and followed by Lafayette at 5 p.m.
