DURHAM, N.C. – Duke junior catcher
Michael Rothenberg has been named to the 2020 Buster Posey Award Watch List as announced by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission earlier this week.
Rothenberg has gotten off to a hot start in year three, leading the Blue Devils in multiple offensive categories. The Duke catcher leads the team in average (.341), RBI (17), runs scored (12), slugging percentage (.585) and on-base percentage (.531), while ranking second in hits and walks with 14 and 13, respectively.
Rothenberg ranks sixth in the ACC in RBI, while placing second in the league in on-base percentage and tying for second in hit-by-pitches with seven. The junior backstop has reached base safely in every contest this year and owns a 23-game reached base streak dating back to last season.
Sixty catchers were nominated for the award by their coaches. Because the award is given annually to the top division one collegiate catcher, the list will be updated to include other candidates until May 6, 2020.
The watch list will be narrowed down to the semifinalists, whom will be announced May 19, 2020. Ballots will be sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced June 3, 2020. A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 23rd Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 25, 2020.
Rothenberg and the Blue Devils hit the road Tuesday, traveling to Charlotte, N.C., to face Davidson at BB&T Ballpark.
