CHICAGO – The fifth-ranked Duke women's tennis team was unable to hold off second-ranked North Carolina in the semifinals of the 2020 ITA National Team Indoor Championships, falling by a 4-0 score Sunday afternoon in Chicago.
With the loss, the Blue Devils drop to 7-2 overall as the Tar Heels remain undefeated (9-0) and advance to the championship match for the second straight year.
"I just told the girls that we competed like we have all year," head coach
Jamie Ashworth said. "We have to learn to be mentally tougher in big situations. We had some opportunities to win the doubles point, and then we back off and get defensive. In singles, we did the same thing. Stroke for stroke, we're as good as anyone in the country, but we need to be mentally tougher. North Carolina is a great team … give them credit. When those situations were close, they did a much better job mentally than we did."
The Tar Heels had an advantage heading into singles action by collecting the doubles point. North Carolina has yet to drop the doubles point so far this season.
The sixth-ranked doubles team in the country, Alexa Graham and Sara Daavettila, defeated
Chloe Beck and
Kelly Chen (6-4) on court one before Cameron Morra and Elizabeth Scotty took down
Summer Dvorak and
Yasmine Mansouri (6-4) on Duke's third court.
The Tar Heels carried the momentum into singles and ultimately took three courts to advance to the championship match. North Carolina features three players ranked in the top 10 by the ITA.
Fourth-ranked Daavettila gave North Carolina its second point of the match with a quick 6-1, 6-1 victory over Mansouri on court two before No. 23 Alle Sanford defeated Dvorak on court six by a 6-3, 6-1 score.
No. 101 Makenna Jones clinched the match for the Tar Heels with a 6-4, 6-3 dub on court five over No. 17 Beck, marking Beck's first loss this season.
Despite being unfinished, No. 10 Chen was up against No. 7 Graham (6-2, 6-5) on Duke's top court.
"The beauty of it is its February and we have a lot of tennis ahead of us," Ashworth said. "I'm impressed with us and how we did this weekend. We're in a great spot and will take some time to regroup. We will be ready to go and get tougher."
The Blue Devils will return to action Friday, Feb. 21 to open ACC play at Boston College.
