ORLANDO, Fla. – With the help of two early home runs, Duke softball held off a seventh-inning rally from UCF, edging the Knights with a 3-2 victory at the UCF Softball Complex.
The Blue Devils finish the Black and Gold Invitational with a 4-1 record to open their 2020 campaign – the best start in program history.
Caroline Jacobsen began Duke's offense for the day with a two-run blast to left field for her second long ball of the weekend (2-0). The Blue Devils left runners on second and third as
Gisele Tapia doubled and
Kendyl Lange hit one up the middle before picking up her third stolen base of the year.
With her second solo shot of the invitational,
Kristina Foreman expanded Duke's lead to 3-0 in the top of the fifth. In the top of the seventh, Tapia started the inning with a leadoff single to center field and
Dominique Salinas entered to pinch run. Salinas then stole second, picking up her first stolen base of 2020, but the Blue Devils couldn't bring her across home plate.
The Knights looked to rally in the bottom of the seventh, getting four hits and two runs, but a stellar throw from
Jameson Kavel in left to
Raine Wilson at third ended the game at 3-2.
In the circle,
Shelby Walters garnered her second win of the season (2-0) after entering in relief. The sophomore pitcher went for 4.2 innings in which she recorded five strikeouts.
Brianna Butler got the start in the circle, pitching 2.1 innings.
