BIG 10/ACC CHALLENGE HISTORY...
Heading into its third season competing in the Big 10/ACC Challenge, Duke holds a 5-3 record. In 2018, Duke went 4-0 against Penn State and Purdue. Last season, the Blue Devils went 1-3 while taking one from Penn State (3-1). Overall, Duke is 7-7 when facing Big 10 opponents.
WEEKEND RECAP...
In the Blue Devils' season opener, Duke garnered an 11-0 run-rule victory over Clemson, who is playing in its inaugural season. Duke's 11 runs tied the program record set at Georgia Tech on March 30, 2019. The Blue Devils capped their first day of action with an 8-2 victory over Indiana in which
Rachel Crabtree garnered three of Duke's nine hits.
On the second day of play, Duke used home runs from Foreman and
Caroline Jacobsen to push past St. John's, 3-1, in the first game. The Blue Devils lost the night matchup, falling 5-2 to UCF.
Bouncing back after the loss, Duke held off a late seventh-inning rally from the Knights to pull away with a 3-2 victory.
Jameson Kavel had a perfect throw from left field to get the UCF runner sliding into third for the final out of the game.
HOT START...
Duke's 4-1 ledger is the best start in program history, improving from last year's 3-2 start. Firing on all cylinders, the Blue Devils looked strong in the circle, field, at the plate and on the bases. The Blue Devils' pitching trio combined for a 1.53 ERA and was led by Walters with two wins. Duke only made four errors, resulting in a .970 fielding percentage while the team batted .290 at the plate. Picking up where they left off, the Blue Devils were perfect on the basepaths with eight stolen bases.
DEPTH IN THE LINEUP...
Utilizing its depth, 17 players had at least one at-bat in Orlando while 12 recorded at least one of Duke's 38 hits. On Duke's first day of the Black & Gold Invitational, every starter registered at least one hit in the two games.
HOME RUN HITTERS...
Putting an emphasis on hitting in the offseason paid off as Duke notched seven home runs over the weekend, including
Deja Davis' inside-the-park homer. Along with Davis, five Blue Devils hit home runs: Foreman (2), Jacobsen (2),
Felise Collins and
Raine Wilson. Collins' long ball was the first of her collegiate career. Duke currently ranks 21st in the country, averaging 1.40 home runs per game.
Looking back at previous seasons, Duke hit 24 home runs in 2019 and 20 in 2018. If the Blue Devils continue to make good contact, they're on track to break the record this year - maybe within in the month.
