DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke track & field team returns to action this weekend as distance and high jump participants are set to compete in the Camel City Invitational on Feb. 7-8 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The Blue Devils' lineup is highlighted by three members competing in elite fields on Saturday. Senior
Matt Wisner will represent the men in the elite 800m, an event in which he clocked the fastest time of any collegiate runner (1:50.46) at the Dr. Sander Columbia Challenge in New York City two weeks ago. He will be facing the 2016 Olympic Bronze medalist in Rio when he races Clayton Murphy at 2:30pm. Wisner had a similar result in last year's event in Winston-Salem, which according to Director of Track & Field
Norm Ogilvie perhaps paved the way for his recent success.
"Matt had the breakthrough performance of his career last February when he finished as top collegian in the 2019 Camel City Elite 800," said Ogilvie. "His time on a flat 200 track was counted as a 1:47.68 for NCAA qualifying purposes. Based on the first three weeks of this indoor season, he should be ready to again challenge a stellar field that includes the Olympic Bronze medalist at 800 meters."
Junior
Michaela Reinhart, coming off of an ACC Track Performer of the Week recognition, will line up in the women's elite mile. Reinhart opened the indoor season with a first-place finish in the mile at the Carolina Challenge in Chapel Hill, N.C. Following her will be sophomore
Sara Platek in the women's elite 3000m. Platek qualified for the ACC Indoor Championships in the 3000 by running a personal-best 9:28.80 in New York.
Friday's event schedule will feature the men's 5000m. The Blue Devils swept the 5000 in their last time out at the Virginia Tech Invitational in January, with junior
Paul Dellinger placing second with a time of 14:40.73. Dellinger will shoot for an ACC-qualifying mark of 14:21.13 and aims for a repeat performance from two seasons ago, when he won the 5000 at the 2018 Camel City Invitational. He will be joined by senior
Cole Hoff – who took sixth at Virginia Tech – and senior
Ethan Ready, who is set to run his first 5000 of the indoor season.
Another feature of Saturday's slate is the men's distance medley relay, with sophomore
Matt Politis, freshman
Theo Burba, freshman
Rory Cavan and freshman
Connor Wells set to compete for the Blue Devils. The men's DMR squad earned a fourth-place finish in its last two events, with Burba contributing at the Virginia Tech Invitational.
The women's high jump will be highlighted by senior
Cassie Martin, who qualified for the ACC Indoor Championships at the Carolina Challenge and then set a personal best by clearing 1.72 (5-7.75) at the Virginia Tech Invitational. Freshman
Hannah Kelly, who had a fourth-place showing in the high jump at Carolina, will also participate alongside Martin and senior
Tracy Jander.
Five Blue Devils will be running in the women's mile – senior
Veronica Brtek, freshman
Emily Cole, freshman
Samantha Schadler, junior
Leigha Torino and senior
Sheridan Wilbur. Representing Duke in the men's mile will be Wiley, freshman
Rory Cavan, sophomore
Joe Cullen and sophomore
Matt Politis. Cullen and Politis are coming off of personal-best marks set at the Columbia Challenge.
Competition on Friday will begin at 1 p.m. ET, when freshman
Davis Howell takes part in the unseeded men's high jump. Later in the day, the seeded high jump will feature freshmen
Beau Allen and
Keith Williams. Allen has cleared 2.10 (6-10.75) twice already in his young career, a mark that qualifies him for ACC's and is tied for the fourth-best in the high jump in program history. He is ranked first in the nation among freshman this indoor season in the high jump.
A full schedule of events as well as live results will be provided prior Friday's competition.
