ATHENS, Ga. – Members of the Duke swimming and diving program finished up the first day of the Bulldog Invitational NCAA Qualifying Meet in Athens, Ga., on Saturday.
Six Blue Devils set career best times in seven events during the first day of the meet.
In the 500 freestyle,
Shae Nicolaisen led the Blue Devils with a second-place finish in the 'A' Final with a career-best time of 4:54.38.
Olwyn Bartis and
Matthew Knox also set career bests with clockings of 4:56.95 and 4:27.05, respectively. Knox's time moved him to ninth in Duke history.
Nick Viers recorded a career best 1:51.16 in the preliminaries of the 200 individual medley.
The 50 freestyle produced two more career-best times as
Olivia Tighe and
John Day registered the top times of their careers. Tighe swam a 23.75, dropping 0.01 seconds from her previous career best set at the GAC Invitational in November. Day touched the wall in 20.76.
Day set his second career best of the day in the men's 200 freestyle with a 1:41.87. In the women's 200 freestyle 'A' Final, Tighe placed third in 1:49.35.
The Blue Devils are back in action for the second day of the Bulldog Invitational tomorrow in Athens, Ga. The morning session begins at 10 a.m., before the evening slate at 4 p.m.
