DURHAM, N.C. – The 16th-ranked Duke rowing team opens its spring season Saturday when it scrimmages Virginia at Lake Michie.
The scrimmage will feature four 1500-meter races, and will be the Blue Devils' first competition since their fall campaign. Duke's last face off came in November at the Rivanna Romp in Charlottesville, Va., where the varsity 8+ boat came within five seconds of Virginia for a second-place finish (13:28.5). While the short offseason has provided a chance to remain competitive internally, Head Coach
Megan Cooke Carcagno and the rest of the team is ready to get the spring slate underway.
"The team has been waging battle amongst themselves for the past few months," Cooke Carcagno said. "We have been competing hard in practices, and it will be refreshing to go up against an outside opponent. Our group is very excited for Saturday's scrimmage."
The reigning ACC Coach of the Year, Cooke Carcagno leads a squad that dueled Virginia down to the wire at the 2019 ACC Championship, finishing five points away in the team standings to claim second place overall. Duke is entering the 2020 campaign with six seniors on the roster as well as sophomore
Amelia Shunk, who earned ACC Freshman of the Year honors a season ago.
"We have been really eager to get this season's racing underway," senior
Lelia Boley said. "We've put in so much work over the last four months, since we last saw Virginia, so this will be a great opportunity to see our progress and find a new base to build from through the season. Above all else, everyone is just so excited to line up and see what we can do against our rivals in a season opener, and we're going to have a great time doing it."
The Blue Devils will kick off their official spring schedule next weekend at the Carolina Cup in Clemson, S.C. It will be one of two stops in Clemson, as Duke will return for the ACC Championship May 15-16, looking to build off of last year's success.
