DURHAM, N.C. – Following two midweek victories, Duke softball is set to host Notre Dame for its first ACC series of the 2020 season, beginning on Friday, Feb. 28 at the Duke Softball Stadium. This will be the first meeting between the two programs in the Bull City.
Game one will get underway at 5 p.m. on Friday, followed by 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. Friday and Saturday's contests will be available to watch on the ACCNX while Saturday's will be Duke's first appearance on the ACC Network.
SERIES HISTORY WITH NOTRE DAME
Between the two programs, Duke holds a 3-2 edge against Notre Dame in the all-time series. The Blue Devils and Irish met twice in 2019 with the first matchup at the Puerta Vallarta Challenge on Feb. 7 and second at the ACC Tournament on May 9. Duke won the first game, 7-3, but lost in the ACC Tournament, 9-2.
During Duke's inaugural season, the team traveled to South Bend where they won the series with victories in game one (5-2) and game two (6-2).
SCOUTING THE FIGHTING IRISH
Holding a 10-5 record through the first three weeks of play, the Fighting Irish are receiving votes in both major polls. Notre Dame is coming off a 3-3 weekend at the Mary Nutter Classic in Palm Springs, Calif., including a win over No. 16 Arizona.
Junior Abby Sweet was named the ACC Player of the Week following her performance at the Marry Nutter in which she tallied 10 hits, six runs and eight RBI with an .850 slugging percentage. Having a dominant start to her junior campaign, Alexis Holloway (6-3) holds a 0.24 ERA through 58.2 frames while tallying 53 K's.
RECAPPING MIDWEEK ACTION
Duke began the week with a 10-2 run-rule victory over NC Central in six innings
. Sophomore
Caroline Jacobsen had a career high night against the Eagles, going 2-for-3 with two home runs and four RBI. Jacobsen's two bombs tied her with the single-season home run record.
Brianna Butler notched her fourth win of the season, racking up a career-high eight strikeouts.
The Blue Devils topped NC State, 5-1, in Raleigh on Wednesday night. Senior
Raine Wilson and sophomore
Deja Davis both went yard for the second time this season while
Jameson Kavel garnered her third triple. In the circle,
Peyton St. George improved to 5-1 with five punchouts through seven complete innings.
ON DECK FOR DUKE
Following the weekend series, the Blue Devils host USC Upstate in a Wednesday doubleheader before hosting the 14-game Duke Invitational with Gardner-Webb, Fordham, Howard, Kent State and Lafayette coming to Durham.
