DURHAM, N.C. – After opening the game with a 2-0 lead, Duke softball dropped its opening ACC contest after Notre Dame plated five runs in the fifth inning and eventually won 6-2 at the Duke Softball Stadium on Friday night.
With the loss, the Blue Devils move to 14-3 on the season and 0-1 in league play while the Fighting Irish improve to 11-5 and 1-0.
Following a quick three-up, three-down top half in the first inning, sophomore
Deja Davis sparked Duke's offense with a leadoff double to left field. Ripping a ball to third, senior
Raine Wilson garnered a single as she sent a ball over the glove of the third baseman. Junior
Rachel Crabtree made a sacrifice bunt, advancing both runners into scoring position.
Stepping up to the plate with two runners on, sophomore
Caroline Jacobsen sent a sac fly to center, bringing Davis across the plate to score the first run of the ballgame. Duke took a 2-0 lead on an infield single from
Jameson Kavel, bringing Wilson home.
The Blue Devils picked up one hit in both the third and fourth innings with a single from Jacobsen and a double from redshirt junior
Jazmine Moreno, respectively. After three scoreless innings, Notre Dame plated five runs on six hits and one Duke error to jump ahead, 5-2. The Fighting Irish gained the final run of the game with a home run in the top of the sixth.
Junior
Peyton St. George pitched seven complete innings, allowing six earned runs in her second loss of the season (5-2).
The Blue Devils and Fighting Irish return for game two tomorrow at 2 p.m. The contest will be on the ACC Network – the first of three games for Duke this season.
