CHARLOTTE, N.C.—Seventh-ranked Penn scored the final four goals of the game to beat No. 10 Duke, 14-11, in a top-10 men's lacrosse matchup at Matthews Sportsplex Saturday afternoon. The Blue Devils were held scoreless for the final 12:30 in the setback.

Duke (2-2) struggled on offense and clearing the ball at times in the afternoon, firing off just 28 shots and committing 25 turnovers in the contest. Penn, bolstered by Kyle Gallagher's 17-of-29 day at the faceoff X, took 52 shots on goal, including 16 in the final quarter.

The Quakers used the Gallagher's success on the draw to open a 3-0 lead in the first five minutes. Sean Lulley registered the first two scores, finishing with six for the game.

After forcing Penn (1-1) into turnovers and Duke goaltender Turner Uppgren making saves, the Blue Devils started to chip away at the Quaker lead with a late run in the second quarter. Duke, trailing 6-2 at the 6:58 mark of the second period, got goals from three different players to cut the lead to 6-5 at the half.

Owen Caputo started the run with an unassisted goal at 6:07 and Garrett Leadmon beat his defender to the crease in the final two minutes for his first goal of the season. Caputo led all Duke scorers with three goals.

Momentum stayed with the Blue Devils as Cameron Badour and Dyson Williams connected early in the third to tie the game for the first time, 6-6. Badour finished the game with a goal and two assists, while Williams had a pair of goals.

Penn responded couple minutes later to retake the lead and start a back-and-forth affair for the next 20-plus minutes. After Duke tied it 8-8 on a score from Caputo, Penn tallied the next two for a 10-8 lead with 1:29 left in the third frame.

With time winding down in the third quarter, sophomore Jadon Kerry came up big for the second straight game with a strike with five seconds left to pull the Blue Devils within one, 10-9, heading into the final 15 minutes.

Caputo and CJ Carpenter tacked on two more goals to start the fourth, giving Duke its first lead of the game, 11-10 with 12:30 to play.

That proved to be the last time Duke would score as Penn tied it on a James Shipley goal at 7:14 and then added three more to ice the victory down the stretch.

Jordan Ginder took the majority of faceoffs, winning 9-of-21 and picking up seven ground balls against the All-American Gallagher. Duke cleared just 23-of-30 times and narrowly lost the ground ball battle 34-33.

In goal, Uppgren made a season-high 13 saves and picked up four ground balls. Penn goalie Patrick Burkinshaw had seven stops for the win.

Duke returns to action with two this weekend against Richmond Feb. 28 and Furman, March 1.
