DURHAM, N.C.—Duke fifth-year men's lacrosse senior
Sean Lowrie scored 1:12 into overtime to lift the 13th-ranked Blue Devils to a thrilling 16-15 overtime win over No. 20 Richmond Friday night at Koskinen Stadium. Blue Devil rookie
Dyson Williams was perhaps the story of the game though with a game-high seven goals.
Williams' seven goals are the most by a Blue Devil since fellow Canadian Zack Greer scored seven against St. John's May 4, 2008. The tally from Lowrie was his only of the night, finishing with a goal and an assist. Overall, Duke had seven different goal scorers and nine with at least one point.
"I don't think any of us are surprised [about Dyson's performance]," said head coach
John Danowski. "He scored his goals in a bunch of ways, rebounds, off of feeds, getting himself in the right spot. I think we'll see more of these days than less. I don't know about seven in a game, but he has that ability around the goal."
It was a game of runs all night long as Richmond (2-3) jumped out in front 6-3 after the first quarter and built an 8-4 advantage in the second before Duke (3-2) answered with a 6-0 run to take a 10-8 lead at the 11:08 mark of the third period. Williams had five goals in the second quarter and had seven in an 8-3 run that spanned 18:21.
"We had to find some fight in us [in the second quarter]," said Danowski. "And I thought we did. We were pretty passive in that first quarter. [In the second] we were competing for ground balls and I thought defensively we made a really good stand that turned into a goal. We found some fight in us that I really haven't seen this year."
Momentum shifted back to Duke's favor late in the third quarter with the Blue Devils scoring the final three goals of the stanza for a 14-11 lead with 15 minutes left. Richmond, however, regained its footing in the fourth quarter with four unanswered to tie it 14-14 with 3:41 left to play. The two teams traded goals in a span of 50 seconds in the final two minutes, setting up the sudden victory finish.
In overtime, sophomore faceoff specialist
Jordan Ginder stepped up to the X for his 19th restart of the evening and with help from his wing
Tyler Carpenter picked up the ground ball allowing Duke to get into the offensive box and call a timeout. Ginder won 11-of-19 faceoffs and picked up nine ground balls on the night.
Duke came out of the timeout with just under a minute remaining on the shot clock.
Owen Caputo got the first shot off, missing the cage. Restarting from X, the ball made its way into
Cameron Badour's stick and the junior midfielder found Lowrie cutting into the middle. Lowrie fired a low shot to beat Jack Rusbuldt for the winner.
Freshman
Owen Caputo posted his third straight hat trick, scoring three goals and an assist. Junior
JP Basile had a memorable night with a goal and four assists for his first career points. Badour finished with two goals and an assist.
Richmond was led on offense by Tyler Shoults' three goals and three assists. Top scorer Ryan Lanchbury was held to only a goal and an assist.
Joe Stein took 14 faceoffs, winning seven for the Blue Devils. Defensively,
JT Giles-Harris caused four turnovers and collected a career-best six ground balls, while holding
Lanchbury to two points. Duke won the ground ball battle 42-25 for the game.
In goal,
Andrew Bonafede played 41 minutes between the pipes and made three saves to pick up his second career victory. Rusbuldt had 11 saves for the Spiders.
"We knew that Richmond had terrific sticks," Danowski said. "They're very slick players and my memory right now would say the goalies really weren't at fault. Defensively, we kind of let them down a little bit. We made the move to Andrew just because we were trying to shake things up a little bit. We'll have to watch the film and figure out how to get better defensively."
Duke returns home to host Furman, March 1 at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast by ACC Network Extra.
