BLACKSBURG, VA. – The Duke men's track & field team completed the first night of the Virginia Tech Challenge on Friday with a program record and six total personal records.
Redshirt junior
Ben Beatty captured the school record in the weight throw with a distance of 19.08m (69-7.25 feet). The mark placed him as the top collegiate finisher in Friday's event and currently ranks as the fifth-best in the ACC this indoor season. Beatty surpassed
Iyin Battle's distance of 18.55 (60-10.50) for the top spot in program history.
Senior
Nico Coleman (1:22.95) and freshman
Theo Burba (1:23.62) both set personal bests in the men's 600m, finishing fifth and sixth in the event, respectively.
Sophomore
Joe Cullen finished fourth in the men's 800m with a PR time of 1:54.96. Sophomore
Devin Connell joined him in clocking a personal-best finish, with his coming at 1:56.84.
Duke's slate of events was kicked off with the men's mile, where junior
AJ Eckmann clocked his own personal-record time of 4:25.73.
Duke will be back in action on Saturday, with Beatty competing in the shot put at noon followed by four athletes going in both the men's 3000m and 4x400m relay.
