DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women's basketball team sent its four seniors out in style Thursday in Cameron Indoor Stadium as the Blue Devils cruised to a 62-47 victory over Virginia in ACC action. Graduate Haley Gorecki, graduate Kyra Lambert, senior Emily Schubert and senior Leaonna Odom played their final regular season home contest in Cameron and were recognized following the game.
The win was the fifth straight for the Blue Devils and moved Duke to 16-10 overall and 10-5 in the ACC, while Virginia dropped to 11-15, 6-9.
Odom led the way for Duke, registering her fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Gorecki turned in another solid all-around game with 15 points, seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocked shots. Junior Jade Williams added 11 points and five rebounds.
Duke jumped out to an 18-9 lead in the first quarter with Odom and Gorecki pacing the Blue Devils with six points each. The Blue Devil defense limited the Cavaliers to 4-of-16 field goals and Duke swatted six shots, led by two from Gorecki.
In the second quarter, Duke continued its stellar play hitting 7-of-9 field goals for a school record 77.8 percentage. The Blue Devils outscored Virginia, 17-11, and took a 35-20 advantage into the break. Odom and Gorecki combined for just as many points as the Cavaliers as each featured 10 first half points.
Duke swatted eight first half shots and assisted on 12-of-15 field goals. Lambert, who hails from Cibolo, Texas, took a charge for the second straight game and now owns 12 for her career to pace the Blue Devils on defense.
Williams, who is from The Colony, Texas, drained her 12th career three-pointer in the third period and reached double-digit scoring for the fifth consecutive contest. Virginia's defense held the Blue Devils to only 13 third quarter points and 30.0 percent shooting as the Cavaliers cut the Duke lead to 48-36 heading into the final stanza.
Redshirt freshman Mikayla Boykin returned to action after missing the Florida State contest. She saw action in 24 minutes and scored all six of her points in the fourth period as Virginia tried to cut into the Blue Devil lead.
As a team, Duke swatted a season-high 10 shots and held a 36-33 advantage on the boards.
Virginia was led by Jocelyn Willoughby with 15 points.
Duke will next hit the road for the first of three straight contests away from home as the Blue Devils travel to Raleigh, N.C., to face 10th-ranked NC State in Reynolds Coliseum at 7 p.m.
