DURHAM – Sophomore men's basketball player
Matthew Hurt has been selected Duke's PNC Achievers Student-Athlete of the Week after helping lead his team to win at Notre Dame Wednesday night.
Hurt poured in a team-high 18 points on 8-of-17 shooting as No. 21 Duke beat the Fighting Irish, 75-65, in the ACC opener for both teams. The sophomore from Rochester, Minn., pulled down seven rebounds and matched a career high with a game-leading four assists in a career-high 38 minutes.
A watch list candidate for the Naismith Trophy and the Wooden Award, Hurt has scored 18+ points in four consecutive games this season, after having four such games last season. The 6-foot-9 forward is one of only four players in the ACC ranked in the league's top 10 for scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage, joining Pitt's Justin Champagnie, Georgia Tech's Moses Wright and Syracuse's Quincy Guerrier. Hurt is third in scoring (18.8), sixth in rebounding (8.0) and sixth in field goal percentage (.522).
The Blue Devils (3-2, 1-0) are in action again December 29 when the welcome Pittsburgh. The game tips at 8 p.m. ET on ACC Network.
