DURHAM, N.C. – After leading the Duke women's basketball team to consecutive victories over Longwood and Western Carolina, senior
Jade Williams has been tabbed the Duke Student-Athlete of the Week.
Williams, a product of The Colony, Texas, recorded 12 points, six assists and five rebounds in the Blue Devils' season-opener versus Longwood. She then followed it up with a stellar performance against Western Carolina nearing a triple-double with a career-high 15 rebounds, nine points and a career-high eight assists.
Williams has improved her playmaking immensely from a year ago. Last season, the Lisa Leslie Award Candidate dished out 1.7 assists per game; however, through the first two games this season, she is averaging an ACC-best 7.0 assists per contest.
"I don't think it's hard for me to be a playmaker," said Williams. "If my teammates are open, I'm going to try and give them the ball. Our offense is very open so it is easy to find. We are mostly going off of reads and I feel like I can ready fairly easily. It's definitely something I had to get adjusted to, but it didn't take that much time. I feel like we're not a guard team in just positions, it [our offense] is very open so it's not hard to be the presence my team needs, especially on defense."
Williams has enjoyed a solid career since arriving in Durham. As a freshman, the 6-5 forward/center received All-ACC Freshman Team honors. She went on to be listed on the Lisa Leslie Award preseason watch list as a sophomore, while averaging 8.4 points and 5.4 rebounds.
Last season, as a junior, she was a Lisa Leslie Award candidate while averaging 7.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.3 steals. She collected double-digit scoring in 11 contests, including six out of her last nine games while starting in 26-of-30 contests and hitting a career-best 10 three-pointers.
Duke will remain at home as the Blue Devils will next host East Carolina Saturday, Dec. 5 at 12 p.m., live on ACC Network Extra from Cameron Indoor Stadium.
