CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—Fourth-ranked North Carolina scored a pair of second-half goals to earn a 2-0 win over the Blue Devils in the men's soccer regular season finale for both squads. It was just the second time this season Duke failed to find the back of the net in a game.
The Blue Devils drop to 2-5 overall and 2-4 in ACC play. Duke is the No. 4 seed out of the South Division in the upcoming ACC Tournament and will face top-ranked and the North Division's No. 1 seed Pittsburgh. North Carolina moves to 3-1-2 on the season.
North Carolina nearly grabbed the early 1-0 lead in the seventh minute as Santiago Herrera hit the left post off a corner kick. The Tar Heels tried to knock in the rebound, but put it over the bar.
The Blue Devils settled in after the near miss from UNC, having better possession and finding space on the right flank to attack. Rookie defender
Amir Daley was a lot for the Tar Heel defense to handle as he pressed forward out of the back with pace in an effort to create offense. However, North Carolina did well overall to defend and never allowed Duke any dangerous opportunities.
With neither team able to get quality looks at goal,
Scotty Taylor had Duke's first shot on frame in the 41st minute.
Daniel Wright slipped a ball into the box and Taylor worked around the defender and tried to sneak a shot past Alec Smir at the near post. The ensuing corner kick resulted in nothing for the Blue Devils again as North Carolina put it out of danger.
North Carolina held a narrow 4-2 advantage in the scoreless first half, while Duke had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
Duke started the second half with high energy and moved the ball well, but similar to recent games it struggled to be dynamic in the final third. The Tar Heels, already with three shutouts to their name, defended well and responded with quality action in the Blue Devils' defensive third.
North Carolina broke through to nab the 1-0 lead in the 56th minute on a header from Giovanni Montesdeoca after Lucas Rosario's fantastic individual one-on-one effort on the right wing to serve a cross into the box. Duke goalkeeper
Will Pulisic had no chance at stopping the wide-open Montesdeoca.
The Tar Heels carried all the momentum after the first goal as Duke never was able to find a rhythm in the final 30 minutes.
North Carolina iced the victory in the 83rd minute when Duke was unable to clear the ball away. Akeim Clarke collected a failed clearance and put it into the six-yard box where Taff Wadda was running in for the doorstep finish and the 2-0 lead.
The Tar Heels outshot Duke 12-8 for the game, while Duke had the 9-3 advantage in corner kicks. Pulisic and Smir both finished with two saves apiece.
Kickoff between the Blue Devils and Panthers will be 6 p.m., at NC State. The game will be broadcast on ACC Network.
