DURHAM, N.C. –  Head coachÂ
Chris Pollard and the Duke baseball program are excited to welcome the Blue Devils' 2021 recruiting class.
Â
Over the coming weeks, Duke will release individual details about its 12-member class. Highly touted shortstopÂ
Alex Mooney headlines the talented group set to arrive in Durham next fall.
Â
"Alex Mooney is one of the most talented student-athletes I have ever recruited," Pollard said. "He has been one of the premier players in the country since the summer before his freshman year of high school. He is not only a great fit for our program, but, plain and simple, he is a great fit for Duke University."
Â
Mooney comes to Durham from Rochester Hills, Mich., where he was an accomplished player and letterwinner at Orchard Lake St. Mary's Prep playing for head coach Matt Petry. He led the Eaglets to a league, catholic, district, regional, and state championship in 2019 after holding a 1.245 OPS throughout the season. During his three-year tenure so far, Mooney has helped OLSM to an overall record of 62-22-2, missing the entire 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Â
While playing his club ball with Canes National 2021, Mooney became regarded as one of the nation's top prospects by Perfect Game USA. He is ranked as the No. 13 overall prospect, fifth ranked shortstop, and the No. 1 overall player in the state of Michigan by the organization. Mooney was also tabbed an All-American by Perfect Game and Under Amour, while earning MVP honors at the 2020 Perfect Game All-American Classic.
Â
Mooney has participated in a variety of major events, including the 2020 Area Code Games and the 2020 East Coast Pro Showcase. He has garnered numerous accolades throughout his playing career as well such as All-Catholic, All-State, All-Region, and All-District team honors, while being named the 2019 Perfect Game Michigan Player of the Year. He was also tabbed to the 2019 Dream Team.
