CARY, N.C. – Senior
Michaela Reinhart earned her third career All-ACC honor to lead the Duke women's cross country team to a fourth-place finish, while senior
CJ Ambrosio paced the men to a fifth-place standing at Friday's ACC Championships in Cary, N.C.
Both teams' placements were the highest by a Duke squad since 2012, and required knocking off a nationally ranked ACC foe at the WakeMed cross country course. On the women's side, the Blue Devils' 114-point total narrowly bested 27th-ranked North Carolina (116 points). The men, meanwhile, collected 134 points, one ahead of 17th-ranked Syracuse (135).
After sitting at seventh in the pack halfway through the six-kilometer race, Reinhart finished strong to post a personal-record time of 20:19.3 and take fourth overall, marking the best result by a Blue Devil runner since
Juliet Bottorff captured the ACC individual crown in 2013.
One of the biggest highlights of the day came from
Samantha Schadler, who added onto her breakout sophomore season by finishing second among Duke runners and 10th in the field – her third top-10 result in as many meets this year. Schadler trailed at 39th overall at the halfway mark and 20th with only 1.3 kilometers remaining before jumping 10 runners over the closing stretch to post a PR time of 20:32.2. The Tubac, Ariz., native came away with all-conference honors in her first appearance at the ACC Championships.
"I'm extremely pleased with the women," interim head coach
Rhonda Riley said. "Michaela and Sam showed up in a big way today and really helped with that fourth-place finish."
Senior
Amanda Beach (20:49.6) and junior
Sara Platek (20:50.2) placed 26th and 27th overall, respectively. Freshman
Charlotte Tomkinson bested her top previous 6K mark, coming in at 21:16.4 for 49th in the field. Junior
Clara Savchik (21:26.7) and sophomore
Caroline Howley (22:03.1) also finished the race with PR times.
In the men's 8K that got the morning started, Ambrosio bested his previous PR by 31.5 seconds to finish 16th overall at 23:35.0 and earn his first career All-ACC recognition. Sophomore
Zach Kinne crossed the finishing chute eight seconds later, coming in 22nd in the field with his own PR time of 23:41.0. Sophomore
Chris Theodore rounded out Duke's top three finishers at 23:46.7, good for 25th overall and a PR.
Other PR's on the men's side included senior
Josh Romine (23:55.9), freshman
Austin Gabay (24:11.0), freshman
Jared Kreis (24:15.8) and sophomore
Sam Rivera (24:21.2).
"CJ continues to have a great season and put himself in the top 21 to be All-ACC," Riley said. "It was the second time Austin hit a score for us – being our fifth man as a freshman is really great."
