DURHAM, N.C. – After recording a personal-best 5K time of 16:53.0 last weekend at the Panorama Farms Invitational in Earlysville, Va., senior
Amanda Beach of the Duke cross country team was selected the Duke Student-Athlete of the Week.
Beach, a native of Melbourne, Fla., finished first among the field of 33 runners with senior
Michaela Reinhart (16:53.9) and sophomore
Samantha Schadler (17:01.5) logging PR's and finishing second and third, respectively.
The sweep helped the Blue Devils earn a first-place team result for the first time in the 2020 campaign.
"As a team we were all just really excited to be able to compete," said Beach. "Most of the focus was just supporting each other and working together when it gets hard in the race."
Beach improved her previous PR, which was set during her rookie campaign in 2017, by over 14 seconds. She'll look to build upon her performance entering the ACC Championships.
"Personally, I'm really grateful that we're even able to have an ACC Championships this year," said Beach. "I think it'll just be a really great opportunity to see all the hard work that we put in this whole season. I think going into it, we're all super excited to see where we can place."
Beach has been a model of consistency since arriving in Durham, logging three top-two finishes as a cross country runner and earning All-ACC Second Team honors in the 10,000m during the 2018 track & field outdoor campaign.
Duke will wrap up the 2020 season at the ACC Championships, which are scheduled to be run on Friday, Oct. 30, at the WakeMed cross country course in Cary, N.C.
