DURHAM, N.C. – Senior
Payton Schwantz of the Duke volleyball team was selected the Duke Student-Athlete of the Week after leading the Blue Devils to a pair of victories over NC State to open the 2020 campaign.
Schwantz, a native of Frisco, Texas, accumulated a combined 23 kills, 24 digs and six blocks over the two matches against the Wolfpack.
"The first game was not our best showcase," said Schwantz. "I think in the second game, we did a lot better at executing and making the most of the advantages we had over them."
Amid concerns as to whether there would be a fall season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Blue Devils are off to a hot start.
"We're just lucky to play," said Schwantz. "It feels nice to get games under our belt and I think we can build from here."
Schwantz has enjoyed a decorated career since arriving in Durham, earning ACC All-Freshman Team honors and being named to the 2017 Duke Invitational All-Tournament Team. She has also been named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll each of the last three years.
A season ago, Schwantz ended the season ranked second on the team with 214 kills and 266 digs, registering a 2.49 kill/set average while adding 14 service aces.
Duke will continue the 2020 campaign as they travel to Charlottesville, Va., to take on Virginia Friday and Saturday on ACC Network Extra.
