DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke baseball team notched its fourth top-20 ranking of the preseason, checking in at No. 20 in the USA Today Baseball Coaches Preseason Poll. The Blue Devils were also ranked No. 15 by both
Baseball America and
D1Baseball, while
Perfect Game listed the Duke at No. 11 on its preseason list—the highest-ever preseason ranking in program history.
Duke is one of eight ACC teams in the Coaches Poll, joining second-ranked Louisville, No. 7 Miami, No. 14 Florida State, No. 16 North Carolina, No. 18 NC State, No. 22 Georgia Tech and No. 24 Wake Forest. The Blue Devils also have one non-conference foe in the poll, with No. 21 East Carolina receiving preseason recognition.
Last season, the Blue Devils made a magical postseason run in the NCAA Tournament, culminating in the program's second straight and second-ever NCAA Super Regional. The NCAA Tournament appearance marked the second consecutive appearance for the Blue Devils and the third in the last four seasons under head coach
Chris Pollard.
The program concluded the 2019 campaign as a consensus top-20 team for the second straight season. Duke received rankings as high as 16th in the national polls, while being recognized as a top-20 team amongst five different publications.
After four Blue Devils began their professional careers and six graduated last spring, Duke returns seven starting position players, including consensus Freshman All-American
Ethan Murray and standout pitcher
Bryce Jarvis.
Twelve players have joined the Blue Devil rankings for this upcoming season, including 11 freshmen and one transfer in
Luke Hartman from Bucknell.
This is the third consecutive and third-ever season that Duke has been ranked in the preseason. The Blue Devils open the 2019 season Feb. 14-16, welcoming Army West Point for a three-game home series at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
