Setting the Scene...
After being on the road for two straight contests, the Duke women's basketball team (7-8, 1-3 ACC) will return to Cameron Indoor Stadium Sunday, Jan. 12 as the Blue Devils will host Virginia Tech at 3 p.m.
The game will be aired live on RSN-TV with Tom Werme (PXP) and Kelley Deyo (Color). It will also be carried on the Duke Sports Network via WDNC AM 620, TuneIn app and www.GoDuke.com with Chris Edwards (PXP) on the air beginning at 2:45 p.m. (ET).
What is Next?...
Duke will close a two-game homestand Thursday, Jan. 16 by hosting Notre Dame with an 8 p.m., tip live on ACC Network. Back by popular demand, it will mark "Craft Beer Night" Thursday.
Three Keys...
1)
Haley Gorecki is the only player in the ACC averaging at least 18.0 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game. Gorecki has averaged 23.5 points, 5.0 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals over the last two games. She has hit 16-of-29 field goals (55.2%) and 7-of-13 treys (53.8%).
2) Redshirt freshman
Mikayla Boykin made her 2019-20 debut against WFU. She scored two points and had two assists in nine minutes, after being out for 350 days. Boykin scored 11 points at Virginia in her third game back.
3) In two years at Duke,
Miela Goodchild has drained 51-of-121 three-pointers at home in Cameron for a 42.2 percentage.
Strength of Schedule...
The Blue Devils feature the second-toughest schedule nationally -- Virginia (1), Duke (2), Oklahoma (3), Miami (4) and Ohio State (5) round out the top five.
Duke's five non-conference losses in 2019-20 came against teams that have collected a combined 70-9 record.
Storylines/Other Blue Devil Notes...
• In her last five home games,
Leaonna Odom has averaged 16.2 points, 9.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.0 steals. She has notched double-digit scoring in each of those games, including a season-high 23 points versus Penn.
• Duke had a season-high 28 turnovers and allowed a season-high 51.1 percent shooting at Virginia.
• The Blue Devils are currently ranked No. 43 in the latest RPI.
• Duke will play its second of two straight contests against teams from the state of Virginia as the Blue Devils will host Virginia Tech Sunday at home.
• On Monday, Jan. 6, Duke's Cameron Indoor Stadium turned 79 years old. The Blue Devils own a 478-125 record over its history.
• After hitting only 9-of-58 three-pointers for 15.5 percent in three straight games, Duke drained 10-of-21 from downtown at Virginia for a 47.6 percentage.
• In the ACC stats, Duke leads the league with 9.80 steals per game.

• After scoring double-digits in three straight games,
Onome Akinbode-James has scored only five points the last six contests. She has averaged only 1.2 points over the last six games.
• The Blue Devils dropped back-to-back games of 20 or more points against South Carolina and FGCU for the first time since the 1996-97 campaign.

Haley Gorecki, Kiah Gillespie of Florida State, Jazmine Jones of Louisville and Shayla Bennett of UNC are the only players in the ACC to post double-digit rebounds and double-digit assists in a game in 2019-20.
• Duke's five losses in November/December were the most for the Blue Devils since the 1983-84 season (6).
• The 93 points in the season opener was the third-most by a Duke team under the direction of head coach
Joanne P. McCallie -- 104 in 2009-10 and 98 in 2016-17.
• Duke features the fourth-tallest squad in school history standing with an average height of 73.21. The three tallest teams were in 2016-17 (73.38), 2011-12 and 2014-15 (73.25).

The Series with Virginia Tech..
Duke and Virginia Tech will meet for the 29th time in school history with the Blue Devils leading the series 25-3.
The Blue Devils have won 24 out of the last 25 contests, but Duke is coming off a 64-57 loss in the last meeting in Durham. In games in Durham, N.C., Duke owns a 12-2 record. Coach P has collected a 17-2 record versus the Hokies.
One of Only Three in ACC...
Haley Gorecki, along with Dana Evans (Louisville) and Kiara Lewis (Syracuse), are the only players in the ACC who rank in the top five in the conference in scoring and top 10 in assists.

Close Games...
Over the last three games, Duke has had chances to win down the stretch, but could not pull through. The Blue Devils were within one possession of all three games with under two minutes remaining.
Duke has been outscored 29-23 over the last four minutes the last three contests, while allowing opponents to shoot 53.8 percent from the field (7-of-13). The Blue Devils have hit 9-of-22 field goals (40.9 percent).
It is the first time since the 2008-09 season that Duke has had three straight ACC games decided by 5 points or less.

Sophomore
Miela Goodchild became the quickest Blue Devil to reach 100 three-pointers at Virginia in only her 45th career contest. She accomplished this mark in three less games than Rebecca Greenwell.

Impressive Against ACC...
In four conference contests,
Haley Gorecki leads the ACC in scoring (22.8 points per game). She is doing so with remarkable efficiency, while shooting 50.8 percent from the floor, 40.0 percent from three, and 88.2 percent from the free throw line.
She ranks seventh in field goal percentage, fourth in free throw percentage and ninth in three-point percentage.
Besides ranking first in scoring in ACC games, Gorecki also ranks seventh in assists (4.5) and first in steals (3.3).
Tough Defense...
In ACC contests, Duke's defense has been among the best in the conference in a number of key categories.
In four league games, Duke's defense is holding opponents to 26.0 percent shooting from three, second-best in the league behind Louisville. Duke ranks second in ACC contests in rebounding defense, surrendering only 33.5 rebounds per game to opponents. And in conference games, Duke ranks third in steals per game, at 9.25.
Losing Streak...
Duke features a five-game losing streak as the Blue Devils head home. It marks the second straight year the Blue Devils have gone through a five-game losing streak.
The Blue Devils have not lost six or more games in a row since a 12-game losing streak in the 1988-89 campaign.
Baines Playing Big Minutes...
Freshman
Azana Baines made her second collegiate start and shined on the national stage against seventh-ranked Louisville. She matched a career high with 15 points to go along with seven rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot in a career-high 35 minutes.
Over the last six games, Baines has averaged 9.7 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.0 steals. She has scored double-digits in three of those contests (Louisville 15, Boston College 15, FGCU 10).
She has played two of her best games against top 10 ranked opponents with 15 points against seventh-ranked Louisville and 12 points at sixth-ranked Texas A&M.
Five-Game Skid...
Duke will look to snap a five-game losing skid as the Blue Devils dropped games at South Carolina, FGCU, Louisville and Virginia, while losing at home to Wake Forest.
The Blue Devils have averaged only 55.6 points, hit 37.4 percent from the field, 24.5 percent from downtown and averaged 21.4 turnovers during the streak.
Opponents have averaged 70.6 points a game and Duke has been outrebounded by a 34.2-33.8 margin.
The Blue Devils played in front of two crowds of over 10,000 fans, while also playing in front of a standout crowd at FGCU.
Boykin Returns...
After missing most of the last two seasons with knee injuries, redshirt freshman
Mikayla Boykin returned to action Jan. 2 versus Wake Forest. She scored two points in nine minutes, while dishing two assists.
She made a big impact on the road at Virginia in only her third game back as she scored a season-high 11 points, had three assists, one steal and hit 2-of-3 treys.
In her first two seasons, Boykin had been limited to only 18 games due to injuries. She averaged 6.7 points, 3.8 assists and 3.6 rebounds in that limited time.
Boykin last had surgery Tuesday, Jan. 22, after suffering an ACL injury. She has suffered four ACL injuries over her hoops career. In her eight games last season, Boykin averaged 9.4 points, 4.1 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.0 steals. Boykin scored a career-high 13 points at ninth-ranked NC State. She added a career-high 11 assists at Georgia Tech. The 11 assists tied a Duke freshman record.
Odom Misses Games...
Senior
Leaonna Odom missed the FGCU and Wake Forest contests as she was dealing with a lower body injury.
She made her return at Louisville and came off the bench. Odom played 28 minutes and collected eight points, one rebound and three steals.
Odom added 12 points off the bench at Virginia to go along with a season-high three blocks, four rebounds and four steals in 35 minutes.
Gorecki Getting to the Line...
Graduate
Haley Gorecki currently ranks second in the ACC with 82 made free throws and third with 94 attempts, while ranking third with an 87.2 free throw percentage.
Gorecki ranks seventh nationally with 82 made free throws and tied for 12th with 94 attempts.
She has hit a career-best 13 free throws in two different games this season, while hitting 10-of-10 from the line against Troy.
Tough Non-Conference Slate...
Of Duke's 11 non-conference opponents in 2019-20, seven of those have winning records. Overall, the Blue Devil opponents have combined for a 118-43 mark so far through Jan. 9.
Here is a closer look - High Point (4-10), Texas A&M (14-2), UNLV (7-8), Northwestern (13-2), Idaho State (6-7), Troy (12-2), Davidson (9-6), Penn (10-1), Nebraska (13-2), South Carolina (15-1), FGCU (15-2).

At Home in Cameron...
After playing four out of the last five games on the road, Duke returns home to host Virginia Tech and Notre Dame the next two contests.
The Blue Devils own a 6-2 record at home and is averaging 76.2 points a game in Cameron.

Haley Gorecki has averaged 19.9 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 2.3 steals and 1.0 blocked shots. In four out of the last six games, she has notched 20 or more points.

Miela Goodchild has hit 9-of-18 three-pointers the last three games. Overall, she has drained 18-of-45 treys for a 40.0 percentage this season at home.
