DURHAM, N.C. – Head coach
Chris Pollard and the Duke baseball program are excited to release their fall schedule, as the 2019-20 Blue Devils begin their preparations for the spring season.
The Blue Devils will once again take part in two exhibition games against outside competition in its fall slate. For the second year in a row, Duke hosts in-town foe N.C. Central, Saturday, Oct. 19, as its first exhibition matchup. The two Durham schools are set for a 1 p.m. first pitch at Jack Coombs Field on Duke's campus.
"We're looking forward to the second year of this new increased NCAA flexibility to play outside competition in the fall," said Pollard. "It's a great opportunity for our program to have a measuring stick as to how our progress through the fall is coming. We have a chance to play against two great programs. We love continuing our cross-town rivalry with North Carolina Central. That will be another great chapter in what is a great Durham-city rivalry."
The second exhibition matchup of the fall pits Duke against Coastal Carolina, Saturday, Nov. 2. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start time, taking place at Segra Stadium, the home of the Fayetteville Woodpeckers—minor league affiliate of the Houston Astros—in Fayetteville, N.C.
"We're also extremely excited to travel to Fayetteville, Nov. 2, to take on Coastal Carolina," Pollard added. "They are one of the most storied programs in college baseball over the last decade. We're looking forward to the partnership with the Fayetteville Woodpeckers and Coastal Carolina as we take an opportunity on Nov. 2 to recognize the contributions and the service of all of those who have served in our armed forces. We can't wait to see a great crowd of current military personnel and military veterans."
Duke begins fall practice Tuesday, Oct. 8, before taking part in three intrasquad scrimmages to close out the first official week. The Blue Devils will host their annual Scout Day, Thursday, Oct. 24, welcoming Major League Baseball scouts for evaluation at Jack Coombs Field.
The Blue Devils will wrap up the 40-day fall training window with the annual Fall World Series, which is scheduled for Nov. 14-16. The team is set for a trio of nine-inning games, which will take place at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
All practices and scrimmages are open to the public across the Blue Devils' fall slate.
This past season, Duke advanced to the program's second-ever and second consecutive NCAA Super Regional. After four Blue Devils began their professional careers and six graduated this past spring, Duke returns seven starting position players, including consensus Freshman All-American
Ethan Murray and standout pitcher
Bryce Jarvis.
Twelve players have joined the Blue Devil rankings for this upcoming season, including 11 freshmen and one transfer in
Luke Hartman from Bucknell.
