DURHAM, N.C. – The Blue Devils will host the first of two tournaments in Cameron Indoor Stadium this weekend as they welcome Appalachian State, UNCW and Wofford for the annual Duke Invitational Friday-Saturday, September 6-7.
Friday features four matches before the tournament concludes with a pair of Saturday contests. Duke (1-2, 0-0 ACC) opens tournament play against Wofford (0-3, 0-0 SoCon) at 12 p.m., Friday before challenging UNCW (3-0, 0-0 CAA) at 7 p.m. The Blue Devils conclude the Duke Invitational against Appalachian State (1-2, 0-0 Sun Belt) at 2:30 p.m., Saturday. ACC Network Extra is set to broadcast all six tournament matches.
Duke opened its 2019 home slate Tuesday evening in Cameron Indoor Stadium and defeated Charlotte 3-0 (29-27, 25-17, 25-17). Sophomore outside hitter
Ade Owokoniran paced Duke's offense with 14 kills to hit .312 while middle blocker
Lily Cooper picked up seven total kills on the evening.
Owokoniran leads the team with 45 kills (5.62 k/s) and is hitting .270 on the season. On defense,
Mackenzie Cole has a team-high 41 digs (4.10 d/s), with
Payton Schwantz right behind with 33 (3.30 d/s). Rookie
Camille Nazor has dished out 67 assists (7.44 a/s) on the season.
The Seahawks opened their seven-match road stretch with a five-set victory on Tuesday at Campbell as junior Brynn Montgomery fashioned the program's first triple-double since the 2003 season, finishing with 11 kills, 20 assists and 11 digs.
App State posted a 1-2 record at the Cactus Classic last weekend, topping Samford and falling to No. 24 Arizona and Loyola Marymount. Two Mountaineers posted over 30 kills during the opening weekend of play. Emma Longley tallied a team-high 38 kills (3.17 k/s), while Kara Spicer recorded 34 (2.83 k/s). Spicer is also hitting a team-best .412 on the season.
Wofford enters the weekend with an 0-3 mark after dropping a trio of contests at the Clemson Tournament last weekend. Catie Cronister leads the team with 18 kills (2.00 k/s), with Kennedy Smith and Meghan Yaffa each with 17 (1.89 k/s). Yaffa is also hitting a team-high .297
