DURHAM, N.C. – Second-ranked Duke rebounded from its first loss of the season with a 1-0 shutout of No. 15 Stanford Sunday at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
The Blue Devils put together a complete game, receiving a second quarter score from sophomore
Olivia Sahaydak and notching their fourth shutout of the 2019 campaign. Head coach
Pam Bustin's squad battled through sweltering heat to improve to 8-1 overall with the win – its sixth this season over a ranked opponent.
"We're on track," Bustin said. "Like I said after Friday's game, we're looking to continue to improve. Unfortunately, sometimes it takes a loss to kind of reset and regroup and get back to what we have to do … For us, it's really just continuing to build the strength of our team."
Duke applied the pressure early in Sunday's contest, generating the squad's first corner opportunity less than two minutes in. Redshirt senior goalkeeper
Sammi Steele was there for two saves on Stanford's first attacking threat of the game, keeping the game scoreless heading into the second frame.
Another corner opportunity arose for the Blue Devils early in the second quarter, as Sahaydak finished on the strike by senior back
Jillian Wolgemuth for her fourth tally of the season. The goal put Duke ahead, 1-0, at the 17:48 mark. That score would hold through halftime, with the Blue Devils outshooting the Cardinal, 9-3, in the opening 30 minutes.
"We didn't get to finish the way we wanted to Friday, so this was a good opportunity to come back at it and put the ball in the back of the net," Wolgemuth said.
Duke's defense held strong against a Stanford attacking sequence in the 40th minute and kept the Cardinal off the board the rest of the way.
"Our midfield does a lot of work defensively," Bustin said. "They create a lot of stuff for us on the attack and I think that was the truth again today. We were able to really slow the ball down as it came through the midfield, which allowed our backfield to stay pretty organized because [Stanford is] a dangerous attacking team."
The Blue Devils held an 11-7 advantage in shots on the afternoon and earned four penalty corners to two by the Cardinal. Steele and Stanford goalkeeper Kelsey Bing each recorded three saves in goal.
The Cardinal dipped to 6-5 on the season with the loss.
Duke remains in the area again next weekend, playing at North Carolina Friday at 4:30 p.m. on ACCN and welcoming Princeton to Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium Sunday at 1 p.m. on ACCNX.
