DURHAM, N.C. – Duke is set to open the 2019 ACC slate this weekend in Durham after being on the road for three games. The Blue Devils (7-6) welcome No. 23 Florida State (6-3) Friday for a 6:30 p.m., matchup before taking on Miami (4-4) Sunday at 1 p.m., in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Both contests will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
Duke closed out its non-conference slate over the weekend at the Hofstra Invitational in Hempstead, N.Y., as the Blue Devils went 2-1. Duke kicked off the weekend upsetting No. 14 Oregon 3-2 (9-25, 28-26, 28-26, 19-25, 15-13) before falling to St. John's 3-1 (23-25, 21-25, 25-20, 12-25). Duke bounced back with a 3-1 (25-21, 25-23, 19-25, 25-21) victory over host Hofstra Saturday evening at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center.
The Seminoles enter the weekend 6-3 overall this season and are coming off a 3-0 victory over Alabama. Junior Taryn Knuth ranks atop the NCAA through the first nine matches of the season, with 1.72 blocks per set and 50 total blocks, including seven on August 31 in a straight set victory against No. 3 Minnesota. Payton Caffrey headlines the offense with 96 kills and a 3.69 kill-per-set average.
The Hurricanes are 4-4 so far and are riding a two-win match streak with wins over FAU and UCF last weekend. Kennedy Prince headlines Miami's offense with 117 kills and a 3.66 kill-per-set average and is hitting .164 percent through eight matches. Elizaveta Lukianov is right behind with 96 kills with a .293 hitting percentage.
Duke is currently ranked second in the ACC with 113 blocks and a 2.46 block-per-set average and is led by sophomore
Lily Cooper with 61. Cooper is second in the conference with 1.74 b/s and tallied a whopping 16 in Duke's three matches last weekend. Freshman
Lizzie Fleming is right on Cooper's heels in sixth with 41 (1.28 b/s).
Sophomore
Ade Owokoniran helped pace Duke's offense over the weekend at the Hofstra Invitational. The Raleigh, N.C., native amassed 40 kills in three games to help spark Duke's 2-1 weekend. In the victory over the No. 14 Ducks, Owokoniran tallied 10 kills before her 14-kill performance against St. John's Saturday. The Raleigh, N.C., native rounded out her solid weekend with 16 kills and just five attack errors in Duke's win over Hofstra. The sophomore leads the team with 119 kills so far this season (3.84 kills/set) on a .252 hitting percentage, which also ranks her second currently in the ACC.
