DURHAM, N.C. – The 2018-19 Duke wrestling team followed up a banner 2017-18 campaign with yet another solid showing.
Â
For the second consecutive season, the Blue Devils finished in the top 25 at the NCAA Championships, taking 24th out of the 70-team pool. For the first time in program history Duke also finished in the top 25 in consecutive seasons after breaking into the top 25 the previous year.
Mitch Finesilver headlined the lineup at 149 pounds, taking fourth at the NCAA Championships.
Â
Overall, Duke sent five wrestlers, including all four Finesilver brothers, to the postseason event in Pittsburgh. Mitch, also an ACC Postgraduate Scholarship winner, captured his first ACC Championship and earned the No. 3 seed at the NCAA Championships – the highest seed a Duke wrestler had ever received. He finished the year with a career-best 33-5 record and 95 career wins. He ranked sixth on the Duke single-season wins chart and eighth on the career list as well.
Â
Joining Mitch at the NCAA Championships were
Zach Finesilver,
Matt Finesilver,
Josh Finesilver and Ben Anderson. Matt also garnered runner-up honors at the ACC Championships to earn his first All-ACC award, while Zach and Josh both took third.
Â
Academically, the Blue Devils excelled as well.
Mitch Finesilver was named the ACC Scholar Athlete of the Year and was joined on the All-ACC Academic and NWCA Scholar All-America teams by Matt, Josh, Zach and Anderson. Duke finished ninth nationally in team GPA.
