DURHAM, N.C. – A Blue Devil was recognized by the ACC for a second straight week as redshirt senior goalkeeper
Sammi Steele was honored Tuesday as the conference's Defensive Player of the Week.
The accolade came on the heels of a 2-0 weekend at the B1G/ACC Cup, which saw Steele and the Duke defense allow just one goal against a pair of top-15 opponents.
Steele made a critical sliding save in the fourth quarter of Friday night's game at No. 15 Northwestern, keeping the score tied at 1-1. The Blue Devils continued to pressure the Wildcats in overtime and saw sophomore
Leah Crouse score the game winner in the 78th minute.
In Sunday's battle with No. 2 Maryland, Steele anchored 60 minutes of stalwart defensive play in a 1-0 shutout victory. Steele tallied four saves, including a diving stop on a penalty stroke attempt late in the third quarter that kept the Terrapins off the board.
Through this weekend's results, Steele tops the ACC and ranks second nationally with a 0.47 goals against average. The Eagleville, Pa., native is also second in the conference in save percentage (.818).
Duke also climbed one spot to No. 2 in this week's Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll with the pair of weekend wins. North Carolina remained in the top spot, followed by the Blue Devils, Connecticut Maryland and Princeton.
The Blue Devils return to action this weekend, traveling to Iowa City, Iowa to take on California Saturday at 3 p.m. ET and the seventh-ranked Hawkeyes Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.
