DURHAM, N.C. – The 2019 Duke volleyball team will kick off the program's 49th season Saturday, Aug. 10 with fitness testing before hitting the court in the afternoon.
Entering her 21st season at the helm of the program, head coach Jolene Nagel returns five of last year's eight starters. During her Duke tenure, Nagel has led the Blue Devils to 13 NCAA Tournament appearances and 14 seasons with 20 or more victories.
“We have many new faces in 2019,” Nagel said. “We are excited to get our team on the court together with our coaching staff and begin the journey. We look forward to this preseason time together to establish our culture, identity and foundation so that we can strengthen our ties that bind us together. Together, head on, is how we will face the challenges this season brings.”
Leading the way for the Blue Devils is junior preseason All-ACC outside hitter Payton Schwantz and 2018 All-ACC Freshman Team honoree Ade Owokoniran. Duke also returns seniors Natalie Schilling and Samantha Amos, redshirt junior Sarah Nelson, juniors Summer Brown and Kincey Smith, and sophomores Lily Cooper, Mackenzie Cole, Alex Springate and Alex Amos.
Duke adds five newcomers in graduate student Lauren Cline and freshmen Camille Nazor, Moorea Wood, Gracie Johnson and Lizzie Fleming.
Following the program's 20th NCAA Tournament appearance, the Blue Devils concluded the 2018 season with a 16-12 overall record and went 10-8 in conference play.
The Blue Devils will open the 2019 slate Friday, August 30 with Michigan State in Charleston, S.C., for the College of Charleston Classic.
