DURHAM, N.C. – With the 2019 collegiate fencing season in the books, a combined 10 Duke fencers garnered spots on the All-ACC Academic Men's and Women's Fencing Teams, as announced by the conference office Thursday.
Duke had the most selections out of four ACC fencing schools and the most in program history since fencing returned as a league-sponsored sport.
Four Blue Devil men earned the honor and six women as seniors Kristen Coury and Rhiannon Harvey, juniors Eoin Gronningsater and Jonathan Schwartzman, sophomores Ping Ping Kitsiriboon, Brycen Rushing, Julia Gianneschi and Maria Papadopoulos and freshmen Huda Aldadah and Zoe Superville rounded out the list.
2019 marks the third-consecutive year Gronningsater and Harvey have picked up the academic accolade while it's the second time for Coury, Gianneschi, Rushing and Schwartzman. Aldadah, Kitsiriboon, Papadopoulos and Superville collected the award for the first time in their careers.
Gronningsater is coming off a successful junior campaign where he became the first Blue Devil male foilist to capture back-to-back All-America accolades since Dorian Cohen in 2010-11. Joining Gronningsater on the national stage were Aldadah, Gianneschi, Kitsiriboon, Papadopoulos, Rushing and Superville.
Outside of NCAAs, Papadopoulos and Superville each garnered bronze medals at the 2019 ACC Championships in epee and foil, respectively.
To be eligible for the All-ACC Academic Teams, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.0 grade point average for both the previous semester and as a cumulative average during their academic career as undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season also factored into the selection process.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
