CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Behind a season-high hitting percentage, the Duke volleyball team swept Virginia 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 26-24) on the road in Charlottesville, Va., Friday evening.
With the victory, the Blue Devils are now 11-13 overall and 4-7 in the ACC with a three-match win streak as the Cavaliers dip to 9-15 and 1-10 in conference play.
Duke registered a season-high .367 hitting percentage with 48 kills and just eight errors and were led by three Blue Devils in double digits:
Ade Owokoniran (12),
Payton Schwantz (11) and
Gracie Johnson (10). Setter
Sarah Nelson dished 21 assists while libero
Mackenzie Cole added 14 digs. At the net,
Lily Cooper paced the blocking contingent with four.
The Blue Devils got off hot and hit .306 percent for the first set with 14 kills and just three errors as Johnson, Owokoniran, Schwantz and
Samantha Amos all added three. The Cavaliers committed seven service errors in the opening frame to allow the Blue Devils to win the set 25-19.
Duke continued its success and obtained a 2-0 lead heading into the third set with a 25-17 second-set victory. The Blue Devils jumped out to hold a 9-5 edge over the Cavaliers and featured Owokoniran tallying five kills to lead the team with eight through two. Duke hit .500 percent and limited Virginia to a .200 clip.
Owokoniran added her 10th kill of the evening early in the third set while Schwantz tallied her second service ace of the game to give the Blue Devils a five point lead. Duke had several match points but were unable to hold off Virginia until a big block by Amos and Cooper to end the match.
Virginia was led by Jelena Novakovic with 11 kills and two errors to hit .391 for the match.
Duke will return to action Sunday at noon to take on No. 2 Pitt in Pittsburgh.
