DURHAM, N.C. - Despite breaking open the scoring with a four-goal second quarter, Duke was unable to fend off 12th-ranked Princeton as the second-ranked Blue Devils fell, 5-4, in overtime Sunday afternoon at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
"Clearly extremely disappointed in having the lead that we had and the beautiful goals that we scored, to just let it slip away with, honestly, some poor attention to detail and going off game plan that was working," said head coach Pam Bustin. "A lot of frustration in that way."
Duke sophomores Noor van de Laar and Leah Crouse each scored two goals and tallied the first multiple-goal games of their careers.
After a scoreless first quarter, Princeton opened the scoring barrage at the 16:52 mark of the second quarter, courtesy of Ali McCarthy. Just over a minute later, Duke answered as van de Laar found the back of the cage with a deflection off of senior Margaux Paolino's shot.
Crouse put the Blue Devils up 2-1 in 24th minute as she dribbled in from just a few yards out for the score. Just 27 seconds later, sophomore Olivia Sahaydak found van de Laar for her second goal of the game, putting Duke up 3-1 with just under six minutes to play in the half. The 27 second differential in goals was the fastest this season for the Blue Devils.
In the 26th minute, Crouse again found the back of the cage, moving left to right toward the center of the circle and firing a shot to extend Duke's lead to 4-1. With just over two minutes to play in the first half, McCarthy closed the gap and recorded her second goal of the contest for Princeton. Duke led, 4-2, heading into halftime.
"We passed and we moved and we joined, and we were taking the ball on angles, Bustin said. "Very linear team, big ball team – we started intercepting the big balls and playing them opposite side. Things that we talked about doing were really working."
Princeton added a goal in the third frame to make it a 4-3 game. With less than a minute to play in regulation, Clara Roth for the Tigers knotted the game up at four, forcing overtime.
Princeton's Hannah Davey scored the game winner and the Tigers' fourth unanswered goal at the 65:56 mark.
"You've got to play the game to the end," Bustin said. "You've got to play what you have. You've got to understand your opponents are playing the game to the end and finish it out with authority. I think that annoyance carried over into overtime, which is too bad."
Both the Tigers and Blue Devils recorded 13 shots, while Princeton led in corners 9-4, including 3-0 in the overtime period. Duke is now 2-2 in overtime games this season while dropping to 8-3 overall with the loss.
Duke takes on Wake Forest next Friday, Oct. 11 at home starting at 6 p.m., and faces Old Dominion Sunday, Oct. 13 for Senior Day at 1 p.m. Both contests will be broadcast on ACCNX from Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
