PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Junior
Adrien Pendaries won his singles match on Tuesday, but the No. 5 Duke men's golf team fell to No. 6 Georgia Tech, 5-1, in the championship match of the Cypress Point Classic at the Cypress Point Golf Club in Pebble Beach, Calif.
The Blue Devils and Yellow Jackets were the top two seeds in the eight-team match play event that concluded Tuesday with six singles matches between the two ACC rivals. Monday, Duke defeated Alabama and Stanford to reach the championship, while Tech downed Cal and UCLA.
Pendaries put the point on the board for Duke as the junior from France posted a 4&3 victory over Connor Howe. The victory allowed Pendaries to improve his impressive match play record to 5-1 this season (2-0 in singles) and to 8-2 for his collegiate career.
But the Yellow Jackets claimed the trophy by taking the other five matches on Tuesday. Senior
Steven DiLisio was downed by Noah Norton, 5&4, while Andy Ogletree also posted a 5&4 victory over
Quinn Riley. Tech's Ben Smith prevailed over
Qi wen Wong, 6&4.
In the final two matches of the day, Georgia Tech's Luke Schniederjans edged Duke's
Chandler Eaton, 3&2, while
Evan Katz pushed Tyler Stafaci to the 17th hole before falling 2&1.
The event wrapped up an impressive fall campaign for the Blue Devils that saw them win the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate, finish second at the
Rod Myers Invitational and rally for a strong seventh place finish at the Nike Collegiate Invitational. In the two match play events on the schedule, Duke reached the championship match in both.
The Blue Devils will next tee it up March 1-2 at the Southern Highlands Collegiate in Las Vegas.
