DURHAM, N.C. – In a low scoring affair, No. 5 Louisville's third quarter goal proved enough as the No. 4 Duke Blue Devil field hockey team fell to the Cardinals, 1-0, at home at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium Saturday afternoon.
"We knew it was going to be a battle," said head coach Pam Bustin. "Unfortunate that we couldn't handle the one that got through to the goal. They are a great team and well balance but for us, they are a team that draws so many corners, a top-five team in the country for drawing corners, and we held them to two. I am really proud of the way the team approached that.
The Cardinals recorded four shots in the first half, opposed to Duke's one, and the score was 0-0 going into halftime.
Louisville broke the 0-0 tie early in the third, as Madison Walsh scored at the 35:44 mark as the ball connected with the back-right corner of the goal after a deflection off a Duke defender.
In the fourth, Duke turned on the offensive pressure as it tallied five shots and had five corners. Louisville's defense held off the Blue Devils in the closing minutes, as the Cardinals improved to 14-3 overall and 3-2 in the ACC, while Duke fell to 11-5 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
"We had to be courageous to move the ball forward and to stretch it a bit more on the weak side and they did that," said Bustin. "They made the adjustments and we had the opportunities, but again we shoot ourselves in the foot. We have an opportunity and we are kicking it away ourselves or we are putting it over the baseline and those are just things you have to grow up and own and I think we are in that moment right now where the threshold is staring us in the face, so I am excited about that part."
Louisville led in shots, 9-7, while Duke led in penalty corners 6-2. Redshirt senior Sammi Steele recorded two saves in a complete game effort, while senior Haley Schleicher led the Blue Devil offense with three shots.
"We had six corners today", Bustin said. "We have to continue to work in making that happen because those are the opportunities we can't let slip away in these tight games. A lot of young kids got a lot of great experience and we are just going to continue to build on some of the really good things we did today."
Duke is back in action tomorrow at home against non-conference opponent Richmond. Start time is set for 2 p.m.
