DURHAM, N.C. – Nearly 50 Major League Baseball scouts arrived to evaluate the Duke baseball team at Jack Coombs Field Thursday afternoon as part of the team's annual scout day.
The afternoon began with team batting practice followed by a round of infield/outfield, before the team took part in a nine-inning scrimmage.
Duke has produced 77 players selected in the MLB Draft, including five this past season. The Tampa Bay Rays drafted left-hander
Graeme Stinson in the fourth round, while the Minnesota Twins selected right-hander
Ben Gross in the 10
th round. Overall, five Blue Devils – Stinson, Gross,
Kennie Taylor (New York Mets, 14
th round),
Adam Laskey (Chicago Cubs, 19
th round) and
Bryce Jarvis (New York Yankees, 37
th round) were drafted, marking the first time in school history that the Blue Devils have had at least five players drafted in back-to-back years.
The Blue Devils have had 47 players drafted over the past 18 years, including 24 during head coach
Chris Pollard's tenure.
Six current Blue Devils have already head their names called on draft day. Freshman
Chad Knight and Jarvis were selected in this past year's draft. The foursome of junior
Steve Mann (2017, 38th round, No. 1145 overall, Detroit Tigers), redshirt sophomore
Wil Hoyle (2017, 38th round, No. 1131 overall, Oakland Athletics), sophomore
Kyle Salley (2018, 40th round, No. 1188 overall, Chicago White Sox) and senior
Matt Mervis (2016, 39th round, No. 1174 overall, Washington Nationals) were all drafted coming out of high school.
In addition, 14 former Blue Devils are currently in professional baseball: Bailey Clark,
Griffin Conine,
Ethan DeCaster,
Ben Gross,
Jimmy Herron, Andrew Istler,
Zack Kone,
Jack Labosky, James Marvel, Michael Matuella,
Chris Proctor,
Mitch Stallings, Marcus Stroman and
Kennie Taylor.
