DURHAM, N.C. - The 2019-20 Duke men's basketball team took the court for the first time this season inside a sold-out Cameron Indoor Stadium in the 11th annual Countdown to Craziness presented by Delta Air Lines event Friday evening.
The night began with introductions of the team before the Blue Devils took the court for a 20-minute Blue-White scrimmage. The Blue Team pulled out a 47-38 victory, behind freshman Vernon Carey Jr.'s 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field.
Freshman Cassius Stanley poured in 12 points and gathered a team-best and tied a game-high eight rebounds. Senior forward Jack White dished out a game-high six assists, added four rebounds and a put-back slam in the closing seconds to ice the victory.
For the White Team, both freshman Wendell Moore Jr. and junior Alex O'Connell tied team-highs with 11 points, while O'Connell had five boards and two assists. Freshman Matthew Hurt scored nine points on 4-of-4 shooting from the charity stripe, while senior Javin DeLaurier blocked two shots and added five points and tied a game-high eight rebounds.
It was back and forth early, with White leading 12-11 at the first media timeout. Blue grabbed a 25-24 lead thanks to a Stanley bucket, which triggered a eight-point rally to open a 33-24 lead with just over six minutes remaining. The lead grew to as many as 12 (39-27) with 3:19 remaining before White made it a game late.
Moore and Jones hit buckets in transition to pull White within three at 41-38 with one minute to play, but dunks by Carey and White and a layup by Jordan Goldwire allowed the Blue Team to pull away before the final horn. Goldwire scored eight with four assists and a pair of rebounds.
The Blue Devils open exhibition play Saturday, October 26 at home against Northwest Missouri State at 7 p.m. on the ACCNX.
