DURHAM, N.C. – Following a strong 4-0 start to 2019, the Duke women's tennis team holds its spot as the fourth-ranked squad in the country according to the Oracle and Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) new rankings. Additionally, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) announced the first edition of the weekly Tennis Channel/USTA College Tennis Top 25 Rankings and the Blue Devils are tabbed second in the country.
The top five stays constant with Stanford (No. 1), Vanderbilt (No. 2), North Carolina (No. 3), Duke (No. 4) and Georgia (No. 5) and joining the Blue Devils and Tar Heels in the conference are Syracuse (No. 10), NC State (No. 14), Miami (No. 17), Virginia (No. 19) and Florida State (No. t20).
Duke kicked off the 2019 calendar year on a high note by defeating then No. 9 Oklahoma State (5-2) in the program's first international trip in The Bahamas. The trip also marked the first NCAA dual match played outside the United States.
The Blue Devils continued their win streak in Durham by defeating Elon (7-0) before hosting the ITA Kickoff Weekend at Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. Duke downed Gonzaga and Old Dominion (4-0) and advanced to the ITA Team Indoor National Championships in Seattle.
Duke has captured the doubles point in every match thus far and is led by seniors Ellyse Hamlin and Kaitlyn McCarthy with a 3-1 overall record in dual matches, followed by Margaryta Bilokin and Maria Mateas (2-0) and Kelly Chen and Meible Chi (2-1).
In singles action, Hamlin headlines the squad with a flawless 4-0 record while Chen and Chi each hold a 3-0 ledger, followed by Mateas (2-0), Bilokin (2-1), McCarthy (1-1) and Hannah Zhao (1-0).
With Sunday's win over Old Dominion, Duke advanced to the indoor national championships in Seattle, Wash., on Feb. 8-11. Prior to the cross-country trip, the Blue Devils welcome Illinois to Durham Sunday, Feb. 3 at noon.
