DURHAM, N.C. – Duke hits the road for the start of ACC play, traveling to the Sunshine State to take on Florida State and Miami this weekend.
After Hurricane Florence's arrival forced three match cancellations, Duke (6-3, 0-0 ACC) returns to the court at 6:30 p.m., Friday, September 21 against the Seminoles (4-6, 0-0 ACC) before battling the Hurricanes (4-2, 0-0 ACC) at 2 p.m., Sunday, September 23. ACC Network Extra is set to broadcast both matches available via WatchESPN.com or the ESPN app.
Duke had previously won 11-straight set before East Tennessee State snapped the Blue Devils' six match win streak in the Duke Invitational finale September 8 before matches against Elon, North Dakota State and North Carolina were cancelled due to Hurricane Florence.
Through nine matches this season, freshman outside hitter Ade Owokoniran leads all Blue Devils with 102 kills. Owokoniran is not the only Duke freshman to make an impact this season; middle blocker Lily Cooper is hitting .419 on the year while average over a block per set, while libero Mackenzie Cole has picked up 146 digs to anchor the backline.
Not without veteran leadership, the Blue Devils have also received solid play from Preseason All-ACC middle blocker and redshirt junior Leah Meyer, who had 86 kills on a .386 hitting percentage while averaging 1.20 blocks per set. Graduate student transfer Andie Shelton has also bolstered the Blue Devils, leading the team in both service aces and assists.
Florida State closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule with a four-set defeat against Auburn this past Tuesday. Outside hitter Payton Caffrey enters the weekend as the Seminoles' top hitter, averaging 4.24 kills per set while hitting .284.
After a 1-2 start, Miami swept the Islander Invitational in Corpus Christi, Texas with middle blocker Bridget Wallenberger earning tournament MVP honors and setter Haley Templeton and defensive specialist Emily Damon collecting all-tournament accolades. The Hurricanes were set to play LIU Brooklyn this past weekend before both matches were cancelled.
Following this weekend's matches, the Blue Devils return to Cameron Indoor Stadium to take on Boston College and Syracuse.
