DURHAM, N.C.—The Duke men's soccer team, fresh off of a second-place finish in the ACC's Coastal Division in 2017, has been picked to take third in a vote of the league's 12 coaches. The Blue Devils come in behind North Carolina and Virginia and edge out Notre Dame.
North Carolina was picked by the coaches as the overall champion with 10 first-place votes. Louisville and Wake Forest also both received one nod in the poll. UNC amassed 70 points in the Coastal Division, Virginia 53 and Duke 46. Notre Dame came in at 40. Virginia Tech was picked to finish sixth.
The Blue Devils finished last season with a 13-4-3 overall record and a 4-3-1 record in league play, which included a win over Virginia and a draw at Notre Dame. The Blue Devils went 3-1-1 overall against their Coastal Division foes. Duke's 46 points are sixth among the league's 12 teams.
Duke will look to replace four starters, which included three players taken in the MLS SuperDraft, as well as a wealth of leadership. The Blue Devils also welcome nine newcomers to the program to boost the talented corps of returning players.
Ranked 10th nationally in the preseason coaches' poll, the Blue Devils drew 0-0 against No. 11 Clemson in their first exhibition two days into camp. Duke will take on South Carolina Wednesday evening on the road and close out their preseason slate Saturday against Atlantic Division foe NC State at 7 p.m. The Wolfpack is picked to take fourth in its division.
The 2018 campaign officially gets underway Aug. 24-26 with the John Rennie Nike Invitational. Duke opens against No. 20 FIU Aug. 24 at 7:30 p.m. Vermont is Duke's other opponent and Elon rounds out the field of four. The Blue Devils look to repeat as tournament champions.
