ATLANTA, Ga. – An outstanding inaugural season came to a close for the Duke Blue Devils (29-27) on Wednesday, as they fell to the Virginia Tech Hokies (23-29), 4-0, in the opening round of the 2018 ACC Softball Tournament in Atlanta, Ga.
A two-run second inning would be all the Hokies would need to secure the victory, as a home run and a pair of doubles helped bring in the game's first two runs. Tech would add on a run in the fifth and seventh for insurance.
Duke made its most noise in the bottom of the sixth, as Haley Wymbs got things started by ripping a single up the middle. A two-out base hit from Amelia Wiercioch put two on for the Blue Devils, but a groundout would close the frame and end the Duke threat.
The Blue Devils also picked up hits in the second and third, as Jameson Kavel tallied a single and Dominique Salinas recorded a double.
Katherine Huey (9-9) earned the start for the Blue Devils. Wiercioch threw 5.0 innings in relief, striking out five along the way. Peyton St. George capped the game with an inning of work, allowing just one hit and striking out one as well.
Year one for head coach Marissa Young and her Blue Devils comes to a close with 29 total victories, which finishes fifth amongst first years for ACC programs. Duke is the seventh ACC program to finish its inaugural campaign with a winning record.
Also adding to Duke's impressive first season is the three All-ACC honors it reeled in Tuesday. Raine Wilson was named All-ACC First Team, while St. George and Rachel Abboud were tabbed to the All-ACC Freshmen Team.
