DURHAM, N.C. – Four Duke student-athletes were named to the 2018 All-ACC Academic Men's Indoor Track and Field team, as announced by the conference Thursday.
The Blue Devils that received the honor were graduate student Steven Solomon, sophomores Matt Wisner and Christian Friis and freshman Jacob Sobota. It is the first career selection for all four Blue Devils.
In his sole indoor season as a Blue Devil, Solomon earned his place among the best to ever compete at Duke. The Sydney, Australia native showed his abilities when he ran a time of 45.44 in the 400m preliminary heats at the ACC Championships, breaking the Duke record, the ACC record and the ACC Championship meet record. Solomon went on to finish in third at the ACC Championships to earn first-team All-ACC accolades and then tenth at the NCAA Championships to be named second-team All-America. He also holds the school record in the 600m.
One year after running the fastest time to ever not qualify for the 800m finals at the ACC Championships, Wisner came back to finish in sixth at this year's ACC Championships. Wisner broke the school record with a time of 1:49.61 and earned second-team All-ACC honors.
Competing in their first ACC Championships, Friis and Sobota both navigated the gauntlet of the heptathlon to earn All-ACC honors. Sobota finished in second place with 5,516 points That total trails only Curtis Beach all-time at Duke and earned Sobota first-team All-ACC honors. Friis finished in sixth in the standings with 5,198 points of his own to earn second-team All-ACC accolades. Both Blue Devils won an individual event in the heptathlon competition, Sobota taking the 60m and Friis winning the 60m hurdles.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team. Every member of the 2017-18 All-ACC Indoor Track and Field Academic Teams also earned All-America and/or All-ACC honors during the most recent season.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes each conference student-athlete with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
