RALEIGH, N.C. – Trailing by three heading into the final two innings, the Duke Blue Devils (24-22) reeled off a six-run sixth inning and added one more in the seventh to complete its sixth comeback victory of the season, defeating the NC State Wolfpack (22-22) 7-4 Wednesday in Raleigh.
NC State held the Blue Devils to just one hit entering the sixth inning and looked poised to walk away victorious before Duke launched its rally. After Dominique Salinas was hit by pitch to lead things off, Raine Wilson and Haley Wymbs tallied back-to-back singles to load the bases with no outs. An errant throw to the plate on a grounder to third allowed the Blue Devils to finally break through, as Salinas and Wilson came home to cut State's lead to 3-2.
After pinch-runner Makenna Lutterloh stole second, a walk to Kortney Dry loaded the bases for the second time in the inning. Amelia Wiercioch grounded a ball to the second baseman, forcing another play at the plate that the Wolfpack could not capitalize on as Wymbs scored to tie things up at 3-3. A Katherine Huey single up the middle would deal the game-winning blow, as her second hit of the day would drive both Lutterloh and Dry home to push the Blue Devils out in front, 5-3.
Salinas would reach for the second time in the inning, drawing a walk in her second appearance. With the bases loaded for a third time, Wilson delivered an infield single that brought Duke sixth and final run of the inning home, making it 6-3 heading to the seventh.
An RBI double from Dry would give Duke an added insurance run in the seventh, making it 7-3. NC State would try to rally in the home half, leading off with a double. Back-to-back groundouts would push the runner to third and eventually home to cut Duke's lead to 7-4, but Wiercioch capped off her ninth win of the season with a swinging strikeout to seal the victory.
The Wolfpack grabbed the early lead with a three-run first inning, using four hits to jump out in front early. After the shaky start, Huey settled in and kept State scoreless over the next three innings. The Blue Devil starter finished the day throwing 4.0 innings and walking two while allowing three runs on six hits. Wiercioch (9-9) took over in the fifth, tossing 3.0 innings with two strikeouts and allowing just one run on two hits.
Wednesday's win was just the fourth of the season when the Blue Devils were out-hit, as they had seven to NC State's eight. Wilson and Huey led the way with two hits each, while Huey topped the team with a pair of runs driven in. Wilson, who has recorded two hits in each of her last four contests, recorded her team-leading 16th multi-hit game. Huey tallied her fourth multi-hit and multi-RBI contest of the year. Wymbs extended her career-best reached base safely streak to seven-straight games with her sixth-inning single.
