Brinkman Honored by North Carolina FC

CARY, N.C. –Duke men's soccer senior captain Cody Brinkman and member of the NCFC Youth Academy program was presented with the inaugural Farouk Bseiso Award Saturday night at halftime of the North Carolina Football Club game versus New York Cosmos at WakeMed Soccer Park.
Brinkman was recognized for his leadership and major role in North Carolina FC U23's success during the club's first season in the Premier Development League (PDL).
The award is meant to recognize a player that has shown exemplary dedication and commitment to the success of the North Carolina FC U23 program during the 2017 season, while honoring the legacy of former U23 player Farouk Bseiso, who passed away in 2014.
Bseiso played with the club's U23 squad for three years, including the 2011 USASA U23 championship team. Bseiso was also a four-year letter winner with the NC State men's soccer program from 2008-11 and served as a team captain of the Wolfpack in 2011.
“We're extremely happy to honor the legacy of Farouk Bseiso who throughout his time with our organization represented the U23 side with passion and commitment,” said NCFC U23 Head Coach Dewan Bader. “He exemplified all the qualities you look for in a player and a person – hardworking, respectful, encouraging and kind. He will forever be missed.”
Brinkman played a huge role on and off the field in the team's PDL season. He served as a team captain and played 1,050 minutes across 13 matches during the summer. While primarily playing as the team's midfield tactician, the Durham, N.C., native netted two goals – including a game-winner over local rival Tobacco Road FC on June 29.
“For the third year in a row, Cody has shown his commitment to our program,” added Bader. “He is the perfect example of the kind of player we want in our organization with his path from the NCFC Youth Academy to the U23 team. We're thankful for Cody's dedication to our club and we wish him the best of luck as he heads into his senior year at Duke. We hope to continue to have him as part of our organization in the future.”
Brinkman has starred with the Blue Devils since 2014 in a central midfield role, totaling 3,937 minutes in 51 contests. He's also performed well in the classroom, earning All-ACC Academic and CoSIDA Academic All-District honors in 2016.
The Duke captain and the Blue Devils return to the field Aug. 27, in the final game of the John Rennie Nike Invitational. Duke, a 2-0 winner over UCF in its season opener, will take on Fordham at 2:30 p.m., at Koskinen Stadium. The game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
