KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Duke fencing team will be strongly represented this weekend at the Junior Olympic Fencing Championships in Kansas City, Mo. This will be the final competition for the Blue Devils before hosting ACC Championships in historic Cameron Indoor Stadium Feb. 25-26.
The Blue Devils will send five freshmen to compete this weekend, including Duncan De Caire, Eoin Gronningsater, Aidan McGinnis, Ben Stone and Agoston Walter.
McGinnis will kick off competition for the Blue Devils Friday, competing in Junior Men's Epee with registration closing at 8 a.m. McGinnis currently holds a 19-25 individual record through four meets and enters the weekend seeded No. 99 out of 313 participants.
Competition will continue Saturday with Junior Men's Saber. De Caire, Stone and Walter will hit the strips for Duke, with former ACC Male Fencer of the Week De Caire owning an impressive 42-16 season ledger. Walter concluded last week's Duke Meet with a 29-11 record and Stone will compete for the first time during the regular season this weekend. De Caire and Walter are the Nos. 31 and 29 seeds out of 245, respectively, while Stone tabbed No. 22.
Gronningsater will round out Duke's time in Kansas City Saturday afternoon in Junior Men's Foil. Gronningsater has garnered ACC Male Fencer of the Week accolades twice after compiling a 37-6 individual record so far this season. He enters the weekend as the No. 4 seed out of 275.
