DURHAM, N.C.—With the 2017 men's regular season college soccer season winding down and conference tournament approaching, the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Committee announced its top 10 with the Blue Devils coming in at No. 6. Seven of the top eight teams hailed from the ACC.
Using the selection criteria and results through games played on Oct. 22, Wake Forest is the top-ranked team in the nation with a record of 15-1-0. Undefeated Indiana and North Carolina round out the top three, respectively. Clemson and Michigan State are Nos. 4 and 5 and Duke at sixth.
The Blue Devils went 1-2-1 against teams in the top 10 and could potentially play No. 4 Clemson again in the ACC Tournament next Sunday, Nov. 5.
Duke is 12-3-2 overall on the year and recently upended No. 13 Virginia 1-0 on Senior Night to clinch the No. 4 seed in the ACC Tournament. The Blue Devils' 12 wins are the most since the 14 in 2009, while the fourth-place finish in the ACC is the highest since 2011.
The Blue Devils are led on offense by senior Brian White's nine goals and 20 overall points. Sophomore Daniele Proch has five goals and rookie Daniel Wright owns three, with two coming in the past two games. Defensively, Duke has been excellent in 2017, allowing just 17 goals and posting seven shutouts. Freshman Will Pulisic anchors the backline in goal with a 0.97 goals against average and a .770 save percentage.
The ACC Tournament gets underway for the Blue Devils, Sunday, Nov. 5. Duke will take on the winner between Clemson and Syracuse at 1 p.m. The winner advances to the semifinal round Nov. 8.
The 2017 NCAA Championship field will consist of 24 automatic qualifiers and 24 at-large selections, which will be revealed on Monday, Nov. 13 at 1 p.m. on NCAA.com. The top 16 teams will be seeded and receive first-round byes before hosting second round games.
First round games will take place Thursday, Nov. 16 and the championship will conclude with the Men's College Cup at Talen Energy Stadium, home of the MLS Philadelphia Union, with semifinals on Friday, Dec. 8, on ESPNU (6 p.m/8:45 p.m.), followed by the national championship game on Sunday, Dec. 10 on ESPN2 at 1 p.m.
